Charles Phoenix

Charles Phoenix is an American author, performer, and humorist notable for his live retro slide show performances, madcap Test Kitchen videos, "field trip" adventure tours, and colorful books, all celebrating classic and kitschy American life and style.

Charles Phoenix was born on November 23, 1962, in Ontario, California. He was raised in the Inland Empire where he developed an appreciation for classic and kitschy American culture.

Career[edit | edit source]

Phoenix's career began in the fashion industry, where he worked in the world of vintage clothing. His interest in vintage clothing led him to collect and comment on found Kodachrome slides of mid-20th century American families. His collections of found slides were the basis for his retro slide show performances, which he began in the late 1990s.

Phoenix has written several books on retro American style and cooking, including "Southern Californialand: Mid-Century Culture in Kodachrome" (2003), "Americana the Beautiful: Mid-Century Culture in Kodachrome" (2006), and "Addicted to Americana: Celebrating Classic & Kitschy American Life & Style" (2017). His books are known for their celebration of classic American themes and kitschy style.

In addition to his books, Phoenix has also created a series of popular "Test Kitchen" videos, where he experiments with vintage recipes and food creations. His most famous creation is the "Cherpumple," a three-layer cake with a pie baked into each layer.

Phoenix also leads "field trip" adventure tours across the United States, visiting classic and kitschy landmarks and attractions.

Phoenix currently resides in Los Angeles, California. He is known for his flamboyant style and love of classic American culture.
