Charles Robert Darwin

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Charles Robert Darwin (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. His proposition that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors is now widely accepted, and considered a foundational concept in science.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, the fifth of six children of wealthy society doctor and financier Robert Darwin and Susannah Darwin (née Wedgwood). He was the grandson of two prominent abolitionists: Erasmus Darwin on his father's side, and Josiah Wedgwood on his mother's side.

Education[edit | edit source]

Darwin studied medicine at Edinburgh University but later switched to divinity at Christ's College, Cambridge. His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle established him as an eminent geologist whose observations and theories supported Charles Lyell's uniformitarian ideas, and publication of his journal of the voyage made him famous as a popular author.

Theory of Evolution[edit | edit source]

In mid-July 1837 Darwin started his "B" notebook on Transmutation of Species, and on page 36 wrote "I think" above his first evolutionary tree. In The Origin of Species, Darwin introduced the scientific theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life. His extensive work in biology and geology also contributed to the development of these fields of study.
