Charles W. Scharf (born April 24, 1965) is an American businessman who currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of Wells Fargo, one of the largest banks in the United States. Scharf has held various leadership roles in the financial services industry, bringing extensive experience to his position at Wells Fargo.

Charles Scharf was born in New York City, New York. He attended John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, New York. Scharf went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Early Career[edit | edit source]
Scharf began his career in the financial services industry at Commercial Credit Corporation, where he worked under the mentorship of Jamie Dimon, who would later become the CEO of JPMorgan Chase. Scharf followed Dimon to Citigroup, where he held various roles.
Bank One and JPMorgan Chase[edit | edit source]
In 2000, Scharf joined Bank One Corporation as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). When Bank One was acquired by JPMorgan Chase in 2004, Scharf became the CEO of Retail Financial Services at JPMorgan Chase, overseeing the bank's consumer and small business banking operations.

In 2012, Scharf was appointed CEO of Visa Inc., a position he held until 2016. During his tenure, he focused on expanding Visa's digital payment services and enhancing its technological capabilities.
BNY Mellon[edit | edit source]
After leaving Visa, Scharf became the CEO of BNY Mellon in 2017. At BNY Mellon, he worked on modernizing the bank's technology infrastructure and improving operational efficiency.
Wells Fargo[edit | edit source]
In October 2019, Scharf was named CEO and President of Wells Fargo, succeeding Timothy J. Sloan. Scharf was brought in to lead the bank through a period of regulatory scrutiny and to restore its reputation following a series of scandals. He has focused on restructuring the bank's operations, enhancing risk management, and improving customer trust.
