Charles Stewart Thompson

Charles Stewart Thompson (February 2, 1864 – December 8, 1921) was a prominent Canadian politician and judge. He served as a member of the House of Commons of Canada and later as a judge on the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Charles Stewart Thompson was born in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, on February 2, 1864. He was the son of John Thompson and Mary Stewart. Thompson pursued his early education in local schools before attending Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1884 and subsequently studied law.

Legal career[edit | edit source]

After completing his legal studies, Thompson was called to the bar in 1888. He began his legal practice in Halifax, where he quickly gained a reputation for his expertise in commercial and maritime law. His legal acumen led to his appointment as a Queen's Counsel in 1902.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Thompson entered politics as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1904 federal election, representing the electoral district of Annapolis. During his tenure, he was known for his advocacy on issues related to trade and commerce, reflecting his legal background.

In 1915, Thompson was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, where he served with distinction until his death in 1921. As a judge, he was noted for his fair and balanced judgments, particularly in cases involving complex commercial disputes.
