Charles Weeghman (July 29, 1874 – November 1, 1947) was an American businessman and baseball executive. He is best known for his involvement in the early development of professional baseball in Chicago.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Weeghman was born on July 29, 1874, in Chicago, Illinois. He started his career in the restaurant business, owning and operating several successful establishments in Chicago.
Involvement in Baseball[edit | edit source]
Weeghman's interest in baseball led him to invest in the Chicago Cubs, a Major League Baseball team, in 1914. He became the majority owner of the team and made significant contributions to its success.
In 1916, Weeghman built a new baseball park called Weeghman Park (later renamed Wrigley Field) on the North Side of Chicago. The park became the home of the Chicago Cubs and is still in use today.
