Chartchai Chionoi
Chartchai Chionoi (October 10, 1942 – January 21, 2018) was a Thai professional boxer and a two-time world flyweight champion. He was born in Bangkok, Thailand, and became one of the country's most celebrated boxers.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Chartchai Chionoi was born Naris Chionoi in Bangkok. He began boxing at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the Thai boxing scene. His early career was marked by numerous victories in local and regional competitions.
Professional Boxing Career[edit | edit source]
Chionoi turned professional in 1959. He gained international recognition when he won the WBC World Flyweight title on December 30, 1966, by defeating Walter McGowan in Bangkok. He successfully defended his title multiple times, including notable victories over Efren Torres and Bernabe Villacampo.
In 1969, Chionoi lost his title to Efren Torres but regained it in a rematch in 1970. He continued to fight until his retirement in 1975, ending his career with a record of 61 wins, 18 losses, and 3 draws.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Chartchai Chionoi is remembered as one of Thailand's greatest boxers. His success in the ring helped to popularize boxing in Thailand and inspired future generations of Thai fighters. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
After retiring from boxing, Chionoi remained active in the sport as a trainer and mentor to young fighters. He passed away on January 21, 2018, in Bangkok.
