Cheese skipper
Cheese Skipper is a common name for the fly species Piophila casei, belonging to the family Piophilidae. The name "cheese skipper" refers to the larval stage of the fly, which is known to infest aged cheese and other food products.
Description[edit | edit source]
The adult Piophila casei is a small, shiny, black or grayish fly, measuring about 3.5 to 4.5 mm in length. The larvae, or "cheese skippers", are small, cylindrical maggots, which are capable of "skipping" or jumping distances many times their body length.
Life Cycle[edit | edit source]
The life cycle of the Piophila casei consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female fly lays her eggs on suitable food material, such as cheese or meat. The eggs hatch into larvae, which feed on the food material and grow rapidly. After a period of feeding, the larvae pupate and transform into adult flies.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
Piophila casei is a cosmopolitan species, found worldwide. It is particularly common in regions with a high production of cheese and other dairy products. The larvae are often found in aged cheese, but can also infest other food products, such as ham, bacon, and dried fish.
Economic Impact[edit | edit source]
The cheese skipper can cause significant economic losses in the cheese and meat industries. Infestation by cheese skipper larvae can lead to the spoilage of food products, resulting in economic losses. In addition, the presence of cheese skippers can lead to a decrease in consumer confidence and a loss of market share for affected businesses.
Control[edit | edit source]
Control of Piophila casei involves a combination of good hygiene practices, use of insecticides, and physical methods such as heat treatment or freezing. In addition, some cheese producers use specific strains of bacteria or yeasts that inhibit the growth of cheese skippers.
