Chiari Type I Malformation Chiari Type I Malformation is a structural defect in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance. This condition occurs when the cerebellar tonsils, located at the lower part of the cerebellum, extend into the foramen magnum, the opening at the base of the skull. This can disrupt the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and lead to a variety of symptoms.

The symptoms of Chiari Type I Malformation can vary widely among individuals and may include:

  • Headaches, often severe and worsened by coughing, sneezing, or straining.
