History

The position of Chief Public Health Officer was created following the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003. The establishment of the role and the Public Health Agency of Canada was part of the government's efforts to strengthen the country's public health system and improve its ability to respond to public health threats. The first Chief Public Health Officer was appointed in 2004.

Appointment

The Chief Public Health Officer is appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister of Health. The appointment is based on the individual's expertise and experience in the field of public health.
