Chigoe

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

The chigoe flea (Tunga penetrans), also known as the jigger, chigger, sand flea, or burrowing flea, is a parasitic insect found in tropical and subtropical climates. It is known for causing the skin condition known as tungiasis.

Description[edit | edit source]

The chigoe flea is the smallest known flea, measuring about 1 mm in length. It is characterized by its ability to burrow into the skin of its host, where it causes intense irritation and itching. The female flea is the one that burrows into the skin, while the male flea remains free-living.

Life Cycle[edit | edit source]

The life cycle of the chigoe flea includes the following stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female flea burrows into the skin of a host, where it lays eggs. These eggs are then expelled from the host's skin and fall to the ground, where they hatch into larvae. The larvae develop into pupae and eventually emerge as adult fleas.

Habitat[edit | edit source]

Chigoe fleas are typically found in sandy environments, such as beaches, stables, and farms. They are prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in Africa, South America, and the Caribbean.

Tungiasis[edit | edit source]

Tungiasis is a skin infestation caused by the chigoe flea. The condition is characterized by severe itching, inflammation, and pain. In severe cases, it can lead to secondary infections and complications such as tetanus and gangrene. Treatment typically involves the removal of the embedded flea and the application of antiseptics to prevent infection.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Preventive measures against chigoe flea infestation include wearing closed footwear in endemic areas, avoiding sitting or lying on sandy ground, and maintaining good personal hygiene. Regular inspection of the skin for embedded fleas is also recommended.
