Chouteau County is a county located in the North-Central region of the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 5,813. Its county seat is Fort Benton. The county was established in 1865 as one of the original nine counties of Montana, and named in 1882 after Pierre Chouteau, Jr., a fur trader who is credited with establishing Fort Benton.

Chouteau County spans 3,997 square miles, with a population density of approximately 1.5 people per square mile. The county is bordered by Hill County to the north, Fergus County to the south, and Cascade County to the west.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,997 square miles, of which 3,973 square miles is land and 24 square miles (0.6%) is water. The population density was 1.5 inhabitants per square mile. There were 2,776 housing units at an average density of 0.7 per square mile.
