Christine Madeleine Odette Lagarde (born January 1, 1956) is a prominent French lawyer, politician, and economist who has held several high-profile positions in international finance and politics. Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Christine Lagarde was born in Paris, France, and grew up in Le Havre. She attended the Lycée François 1er in Le Havre and later studied at the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, United States, as part of an exchange program. She returned to France to complete her education, earning a master's degree in English, labor law, and social law from the University of Paris X Nanterre. She also holds a master's degree from the Institut d'études politiques d'Aix-en-Provence.

Legal Career[edit | edit source]

Lagarde began her career as a lawyer with the international law firm Baker & McKenzie in 1981. She specialized in labor and antitrust law and quickly rose through the ranks to become the first female chairman of the firm in 1999. During her tenure, she expanded the firm's international presence and was instrumental in its global strategy.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Lagarde entered politics in 2005 when she was appointed as the French Minister of Foreign Trade. She later served as the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and then as the Minister of Economic Affairs, Finance, and Employment. In these roles, she was known for her pro-business stance and efforts to reform the French economy.

In 2011, Lagarde was appointed as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, succeeding Dominique Strauss-Kahn. She was the first woman to hold this position.
