Chuhuiv (Ukrainian: Чугуїв) is a city in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Chuhuiv Raion. The city is located on the Siverskyi Donets River, approximately 35 kilometers southeast of Kharkiv, the administrative center of the oblast.

History[edit | edit source]

Chuhuiv was founded in 1638 as a fortress to protect the southern borders of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from Tatar invasions. It later became part of the Russian Empire following the Treaty of Pereyaslav in 1654. During the 19th century, Chuhuiv developed into a significant military settlement and training center for the Imperial Russian Army.

In the 20th century, Chuhuiv was affected by major historical events, including the Russian Revolution, World War II, and the Chernobyl disaster. During World War II, the city was occupied by German forces from 1941 to 1943. After the war, Chuhuiv became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and later, independent Ukraine following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
