Chukchi sea

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Chukchi Sea is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is bordered in the west by the Long Strait, off Wrangel Island, and in the east by Point Barrow, Alaska, extending into the Beaufort Sea. The sea has an approximate area of 595,000 km² (230,000 mi²) and is only navigable about four months of the year.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Chukchi Sea is named after the Chukchi people, who reside on its shores. The sea is bounded in the east by Point Barrow, Alaska, and extends into the Beaufort Sea. The western border is formed by the Long Strait, off Wrangel Island. The sea is connected to the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Bering Sea to the south.

Climate[edit | edit source]

The Chukchi Sea has a harsh climate with cold temperatures, high winds, and frequent storms. The sea is covered by ice for most of the year, making it navigable only during the short summer months.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

The Chukchi Sea is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Marine mammals such as walruses, seals, and whales are common, as are numerous species of birds. The sea also supports a diverse range of fish species and various types of plankton.

Human Activity[edit | edit source]

The Chukchi Sea is of significant economic importance to the surrounding regions. It is a major source of fish and other seafood, and also has potential for oil and gas exploration. However, these activities also pose threats to the sea's delicate ecosystem.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

Efforts are being made to protect the Chukchi Sea and its wildlife. These include regulations on fishing and hunting, as well as measures to prevent pollution from oil and gas exploration.
