Cigar box

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Cigar box is a container specifically designed for the storage and transportation of cigars. Cigar boxes are produced in a variety of sizes and shapes, typically constructed from wood, although other materials such as glass and metal are also used. The primary function of a cigar box is to protect the cigars from damage and to maintain the optimal humidity and temperature for preserving the cigars' quality.

History[edit | edit source]

The use of cigar boxes can be traced back to the 19th century, when the increase in cigar production necessitated a method for storing and transporting the product. The first cigar boxes were simple wooden crates, but as the popularity of cigars grew, so did the sophistication of the boxes. By the late 19th century, cigar boxes had become an art form in their own right, with manufacturers investing significant time and resources into creating visually appealing designs.

Construction[edit | edit source]

The construction of a cigar box is a meticulous process that requires a high level of craftsmanship. The most common material used is Spanish cedar, a type of wood that is known for its ability to maintain a consistent level of humidity. Other materials, such as mahogany and oak, are also used. The interior of the box is often lined with a layer of cedar to further enhance the preservation qualities of the box.

Types of Cigar Boxes[edit | edit source]

There are several types of cigar boxes, each with its own unique characteristics. These include the cabinet selection, which is a large, flat box that typically holds 25 to 50 cigars; the 8-9-8, a round-edged box that holds three rows of cigars; and the flat top, a box with a flat top and bottom that holds two rows of cigars.

Collecting[edit | edit source]

Cigar box collecting has become a popular hobby, with collectors drawn to the unique designs and historical significance of the boxes. Some collectors focus on boxes from a specific era or manufacturer, while others collect boxes based on their artistic value.
