Cinnamon leaf oil

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Cinnamon leaf oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the Cinnamon tree, scientifically known as Cinnamomum verum. It is widely used in aromatherapy, cosmetics, and as a flavoring agent in cooking and baking.

Extraction[edit | edit source]

The oil is extracted through a process known as steam distillation. Freshly picked cinnamon leaves are subjected to high-pressure steam. The heat causes the cells of the leaves to break down and release their essential oils. The steam carrying the oil is then cooled, causing the oil to separate and be collected.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Cinnamon leaf oil primarily contains Eugenol, which accounts for about 80% of its composition. Other components include Cinnamaldehyde, Linalool, and Beta-Caryophyllene. The exact composition can vary depending on the variety of cinnamon and the extraction process.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Aromatherapy[edit | edit source]

In aromatherapy, cinnamon leaf oil is used for its warming and stimulating effects. It is believed to improve circulation, reduce stress, and boost the immune system.

Cosmetics[edit | edit source]

In the cosmetic industry, it is used for its antiseptic and astringent properties. It is often found in skin care products, soaps, and perfumes.

Culinary[edit | edit source]

In cooking and baking, cinnamon leaf oil is used as a flavoring agent. It imparts a warm, spicy flavor to dishes and baked goods.

Safety and Precautions[edit | edit source]

While generally safe for use, cinnamon leaf oil can cause skin irritation in some individuals, especially when used undiluted. It is recommended to perform a patch test before using it topically. Ingesting cinnamon leaf oil should be done with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
