Circinate balanitis

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Circinate balanitis is a skin condition that primarily affects the glans penis in males. It is often associated with Reiter's syndrome, a type of reactive arthritis, but can also occur independently. The condition is characterized by annular, circinate (ring-shaped) lesions on the glans penis.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of circinate balanitis is the presence of ring-shaped lesions on the glans penis. These lesions may be accompanied by itching, burning, or discomfort. In some cases, the lesions may also appear on the urethra or under the foreskin.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Circinate balanitis is often associated with Reiter's syndrome, a type of reactive arthritis that is triggered by an infection in another part of the body. However, the condition can also occur independently. Other potential causes include bacterial infection, fungal infection, or irritation from harsh soaps or detergents.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of circinate balanitis is typically based on the characteristic appearance of the lesions. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to rule out other conditions. Additional tests may be performed to identify any underlying conditions, such as Reiter's syndrome or a bacterial or fungal infection.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for circinate balanitis typically involves addressing the underlying cause of the condition. This may involve antibiotics for a bacterial infection, antifungal medication for a fungal infection, or treatment for Reiter's syndrome. Topical creams or ointments may also be used to alleviate symptoms.
