- Citronelle was incorporated in 1892, although the area had been settled long before that. The name Citronelle is derived from the French word for lemon, 'citron', due to the large number of lemon trees found in the area by early settlers.

- Citronelle is located at the northern border of Mobile County, and is about 34 miles northwest of the city of Mobile. The city is known for its rolling hills and numerous creeks and streams.
