CoTherix

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

CoTherix was a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of therapeutic products for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The company was founded in 2000 and was headquartered in South San Francisco, California.

History[edit | edit source]

CoTherix was established with the aim of developing innovative therapies for patients with unmet medical needs in the cardiovascular space. The company gained significant attention in the biopharmaceutical industry due to its focus on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a rare and life-threatening condition.

Products[edit | edit source]

The primary product developed by CoTherix was Ventavis (iloprost), an inhaled therapy for the treatment of PAH. Ventavis was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2004 and became a key treatment option for patients suffering from this condition. The drug works by dilating blood vessels in the lungs, thereby reducing the blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries.

Acquisition[edit | edit source]

In 2006, CoTherix was acquired by Actelion, a Swiss biopharmaceutical company, for approximately $420 million. The acquisition allowed Actelion to expand its portfolio of treatments for PAH and further solidified its position in the market.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

CoTherix was involved in various research and development activities aimed at discovering new treatments for cardiovascular diseases. The company collaborated with several academic institutions and research organizations to advance its pipeline of potential therapies.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although CoTherix is no longer an independent entity, its contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine, particularly in the treatment of PAH, have had a lasting impact. The development of Ventavis provided a new therapeutic option for patients and highlighted the importance of innovative approaches in addressing rare diseases.
