Shield[edit | edit source]
The shield is divided into four parts:
- The top left quadrant features a Somba castle, representing the history and tradition of the Somba people.
- The top right quadrant displays a Star of Benin, which is the highest national honor.
- The bottom left quadrant shows a palm tree, symbolizing the agricultural wealth of the country.
- The bottom right quadrant contains a ship, representing the arrival of Europeans and the importance of maritime trade.
Supporters[edit | edit source]
The shield is supported by two leopards, which are native to the region and symbolize the strength and courage of the people of Benin.
Motto[edit | edit source]
Below the shield is a ribbon with the national motto: Fraternité, Justice, Travail (Fraternity, Justice, Work).
History[edit | edit source]
The current coat of arms was adopted in 1990, following the establishment of the Republic of Benin. It replaced the previous coat of arms used during the period when the country was known as the People's Republic of Benin.
