Collagen fiber

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Collagen fiber is a type of protein that is abundantly found in the human body. It is a major component of the extracellular matrix that supports most tissues and gives cells structure from the outside, but collagen is also found inside certain cells.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Collagen fibers are composed of individual collagen molecules that are bundled together to form a long, thin fibril. These fibrils are then bundled together to form a collagen fiber. Each collagen molecule is a triple helix composed of three polypeptide chains, each of which is a coil of amino acids. The primary amino acids in collagen are glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline.

Function[edit | edit source]

Collagen fibers provide structural support to the tissues and organs in the body. They are strong and flexible, allowing them to withstand tension and pressure. Collagen fibers are also involved in the healing process of wounds and in the formation of scar tissue. In addition, they play a role in the elasticity of the skin, the strength of the hair and nails, and the flexibility of the joints.

Types of Collagen[edit | edit source]

There are several types of collagen, each with a different function and structure. Type I collagen is the most abundant and is found in skin, tendon, vascular ligature, organs, and bone. Type II collagen is found in cartilage and is responsible for its tensile strength. Type III collagen is found in reticular fibers, such as those in the bone marrow. It is usually found alongside Type I. Type IV collagen forms the basis of cell basement membrane and is found in layers of the skin.

Collagen Disorders[edit | edit source]

There are several disorders associated with collagen, including osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and scurvy. These disorders can result in a variety of symptoms, including brittle bones, joint hypermobility, and bleeding gums.
