Collar (BDSM)
Collar (BDSM) is a device of any material worn around the neck of the submissive partner in a BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Dominance, Submission, Sadism, and Masochism) relationship. The primary purpose of the collar is to symbolize the submissive or slave's status and their submission to their dominant partner. It can also serve as a means of physical restraint when attached to a leash, chains, or other bondage equipment. Collars are imbued with significant meaning within the BDSM community, often representing the relationship between the dominant and submissive, much like a wedding ring denotes marriage in the wider society.
Types of Collars[edit | edit source]
There are several types of collars used within the BDSM community, each signifying different stages or aspects of the relationship:
- Consideration Collar - This is typically the first type of collar given and is used during the period when the dominant and submissive are exploring the possibility of a deeper relationship. It signifies that the submissive is being considered as a potential long-term partner.
- Training Collar - A step up from the consideration collar, the training collar signifies that the submissive is being trained by the dominant. This period is where the submissive learns the rules, protocols, and behaviors expected by their dominant.
- Protection Collar - Worn by submissives under the protection of a dominant, usually when their primary dominant is unable to fulfill their role temporarily. It signals to others in the community that the submissive is not to be approached without the protecting dominant's permission.
- Play Collar - Used during scenes or play sessions, this collar is temporary and signifies that the submissive is under the control of the dominant for the duration of the play.
- Permanent Collar - Also known as a formal or slave collar, this type of collar signifies a long-term commitment between the dominant and submissive, often involving a ceremony similar to a wedding.
Materials and Design[edit | edit source]
Collars can be made from a variety of materials, including leather, metal, rubber, and fabric. The design can range from simple and discreet to elaborate and decorative, depending on the preferences of the wearer and the significance of the collar within their relationship. Some collars are lockable, which emphasizes the control the dominant has over the submissive.
Symbolism and Etiquette[edit | edit source]
The wearing of a collar in the BDSM community carries significant symbolism. It represents the trust and commitment between the dominant and submissive, as well as the submissive's willingness to be controlled and owned by their dominant. There is also a specific etiquette surrounding the wearing, giving, and accepting of collars, with rituals and ceremonies often accompanying the locking of a permanent collar.
Safety and Consent[edit | edit source]
As with all aspects of BDSM, the use of collars is based on the principles of safe, sane, and consensual (SSC) practices. Both parties must fully understand and agree to what the collar represents in their relationship. Communication and consent are paramount, especially when a collar signifies a shift in the dynamics of the relationship.
