Collingwood, Ontario is a town located in Simcoe County, in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is situated on the southern point of Georgian Bay and is part of the Greater Golden Horseshoe, a densely populated and industrialized region of Ontario.

Collingwood was incorporated as a town in 1858, nine years before Confederation, and was named after Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, Lord Nelson’s second in command at the Battle of Trafalgar, who assumed command of the British fleet after Nelson's death.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The town is located along the southern shores of Georgian Bay, and its harbour is a natural endowment. The Niagara Escarpment, a long escarpment in the United States and Canada that runs predominantly east/west from New York State, through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois, is just south of the town.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Collingwood's economy has a mix of industrial, recreational, and service sectors. The town is home to several notable companies, including the Collingwood Shipbuilding Company, which constructed the first Alaska Highway in the 1940s.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Collingwood is known for its vibrant arts scene and rich local history. It is home to the Collingwood Museum and the Theatre Collingwood, which offer a variety of performances and exhibits. The town also hosts several annual events, such as the Collingwood Elvis Festival and the Collingwood Art Crawl.

Collingwood has a number of educational institutions, including both public and Catholic elementary and secondary schools. The town is also home to the Georgian College Collingwood Campus.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Collingwood is served by Collingwood Airport and Colltrans, the local public transit system. The town is also accessible by several major highways, including Highway 26 and Highway 124.
