Comfort Starr (July 6, 1589 – January 2, 1659) was an English physician and one of the early settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He is notable for his contributions to the medical field in the early American colonies and for his role in the establishment of Harvard College.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Comfort Starr was born in Ashford, Kent, England, to Thomas Starr and Susan Martyn. He was baptized on July 6, 1589. Starr pursued his education in England, where he trained as a physician. His medical practice in England laid the foundation for his later work in the American colonies.
Emigration to America[edit | edit source]
In 1635, Comfort Starr emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony aboard the ship Hercules. He was part of a wave of Puritan settlers seeking religious freedom and new opportunities in the New World. Starr settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he quickly became a respected member of the community.
Contributions to Medicine[edit | edit source]
As a physician, Comfort Starr was instrumental in providing medical care to the early settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His knowledge and skills were highly valued in a time when medical practitioners were scarce. Starr's practice included treating common ailments of the time and providing care during outbreaks of disease.
Role in Harvard College[edit | edit source]
Comfort Starr was one of the original benefactors of Harvard College, which was established in 1636. His support and contributions helped lay the groundwork for what would become one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the United States. Starr's involvement with Harvard reflects his commitment to education and the advancement of knowledge.
Family and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Comfort Starr married Elizabeth Watts, and together they had several children. His descendants continued to play significant roles in American society. Starr's legacy is remembered not only through his contributions to medicine and education but also through his descendants who carried on his pioneering spirit.
Comfort Starr passed away on January 2, 1659, in Boston, Massachusetts. He is buried in the King's Chapel Burying Ground, a historic cemetery in Boston.
