Constance Collier
Constance Collier (January 22, 1878 – April 25, 1955) was a renowned English actress and drama coach, known for her work on both the stage and in film. Her career spanned over six decades, during which she became a prominent figure in the theatrical world.

Constance Collier was born in Windsor, Berkshire, England. She began her acting career at a young age, joining the Gaiety Theatre company in 1894. Her early work was primarily in musical comedies, where she quickly gained recognition for her talent and stage presence.
Stage Career[edit | edit source]
Collier's stage career flourished in the early 20th century. She worked with some of the most notable figures in theatre, including Herbert Beerbohm Tree and George Bernard Shaw. Her performances in plays such as Antony and Cleopatra and The Merry Wives of Windsor were highly acclaimed.
In 1905, she joined the company of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree at His Majesty's Theatre, where she played leading roles in productions such as The Tempest and The Winter's Tale. Her portrayal of Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra was particularly celebrated.
Film Career[edit | edit source]
Collier transitioned to film in the 1910s, appearing in silent films such as The Tongues of Men (1916) and The Impossible Woman (1919). Her film career continued into the sound era, with roles in movies like Stage Door (1937) and Kitty Foyle (1940).

In addition to her acting career, Constance Collier was a respected drama coach. She worked with many prominent actors, including Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh. Her coaching was instrumental in shaping the careers of several Hollywood stars.

Collier was married to actor Julian L'Estrange from 1912 until his death in 1918. She spent her later years in New York City, where she continued to coach actors and remained active in the theatre community until her death in 1955.
