Cottage Inn Pizza was established in 1948 by two Greek-American brothers, Gus and John Kollias. The original location was a small restaurant on the corner of William Street and Thompson Street in Ann Arbor. The restaurant quickly became popular among University of Michigan students and local residents.

In 1959, Cottage Inn Pizza became the first restaurant in Ann Arbor to serve pizza. The success of the original location led to the opening of additional locations throughout Michigan and eventually other states.
