The town is situated at the intersection of Interstate 5 and State Route 273, in the northern part of the state. - Cottonwood was a stagecoach town where a toll road brought miners and other people traveling north. The town was named after the Cottonwood Creek which runs through the town.

- Cottonwood is located in the northern part of California, approximately 30 miles south of Redding and 100 miles north of Sacramento. The town is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, including the Sacramento River, Mount Shasta, and the Trinity Alps.
