Covenant Health Systems

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Covenant Health Systems is a non-profit Catholic regional health care system that sponsors hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living residences, and other health and elder services throughout New England. It was established in 1983 by the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, also known as the Grey Nuns, to oversee their health care, elder care, and social service systems in the United States. Today, Covenant Health Systems serves as the sponsor, governance organization, and manager of multiple health and elder care organizations in New England. The company is committed to advancing the healing ministry of Jesus.

The Sisters of Charity of Montreal have a long history of providing care. In 1855, they were called upon to assist with a cholera and malaria epidemic in Toledo, Ohio. They established St. Vincent Hospital in response to this crisis. In 1983, the Sisters of Charity of Montreal established the Grey Nuns Health System to oversee their health care, elder care, and social service systems in the United States. As other religious congregations expressed interest in joining the Grey Nuns Health System, the name was changed to Covenant Health Systems in 1986. While St. Vincent's Medical Center in Toledo joined Catholic Health Partners, Covenant Health Systems continued to manage the facilities in New England. Covenant Health Systems sponsors "Covenant Health Inc.

Some of the member facilities sponsored by the Grey Nuns include Mary Immaculate (MI) Health/Care Services in Lawrence, MA, St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, NH, Youville House Assisted Living Residence in Cambridge, MA, Youville Place Assisted Living Residence in Lexington, MA, and St. Mary Health Care Center in Worcester, MA. St. Mary's Health System in Lewiston, ME is sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of St. Hyacinthe, a separate branch of the Grey Nuns.

Covenant Health Systems also sponsors the Poor Sisters of Jesus Crucified and the Sorrowful Mother (PSJCSM) congregation, which was founded by Rev. Alphonsus Maria, C.P. in 1924 in the diocese of Scranton, Pennsylvania.
