Crackle was founded in 2004 as Grouper by a group of entrepreneurs. In 2006, it was acquired by Sony Pictures Entertainment and rebranded as Crackle. The service initially focused on user-generated content but later shifted to professional content, including movies and TV shows from Sony's library. In 2019, Sony sold a majority stake in Crackle to Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, forming a joint venture called Crackle Plus.
