Cub Foods

Cub Foods is a supermarket chain with seventy-seven stores in Minnesota and Illinois. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of SuperValu Inc., with headquarters in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

History[edit | edit source]

Cub Foods was founded by brothers Charles and Jack Hooley, brother-in-law Robert Thueson, and Culver Davis Jr. in the Stillwater and Minneapolis suburbs in 1968. The name "CUB" originally stood for Consumers United for Buying, and Cub Foods was one of the first total discount food supermarkets in the United States.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Cub Foods offers a wide variety of products, including bakery, dairy, deli, frozen foods, grocery, meat, pharmacy, produce, seafood, and snacks. In addition to these, some stores also offer liquor and pet care products.

Ownership[edit | edit source]

In 1980, Cub Foods was purchased by SuperValu Inc., a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest grocery retail chains in the United States. In 2018, SuperValu was acquired by United Natural Foods, but Cub Foods continues to operate as a separate brand.
