Cuesta
Cuesta is a term used in geology and physical geography to describe a landform that consists of a ridge with a gentle slope (dip slope) on one side, and a steep slope (scarp slope) on the other. This formation is typically the result of differential erosion on rocks of different hardnesses that are tilted, rather than horizontal. The softer rock erodes more quickly, forming the gentle slope, while the harder rock resists erosion, forming the steep slope. Cuestas are common in sedimentary rock landscapes where layers of rock have been slightly tilted, exposing the edges of the slightly differing resistant layers.
Formation[edit | edit source]
Cuestas form in regions where sedimentary rocks have been gently tilted rather than remaining horizontal. Over time, these tilted layers are subjected to erosion. The differential erosion rates between the harder and softer rock layers lead to the development of the cuesta's characteristic slopes. The gentle slope corresponds to the dip of the sedimentary layers, while the steep slope is formed by the erosion of the softer rock, leaving the more resistant rock layer exposed.

A cuesta's profile is asymmetrical. The gentle slope, or dip slope, follows the inclination of the underlying rock layers, while the opposite side features a steeper scarp slope. This steep slope is often the result of more rapid erosion of the less resistant rocks. The crest of a cuesta represents the edge of the harder rock layer. Cuestas can vary greatly in size, from small hills to large ridges that dominate the landscape.
