Curacha

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Curacha (also known as spanner crab or red frog crab) is a type of crustacean that is native to the waters surrounding the Philippines. It is particularly abundant in the Zamboanga Peninsula, where it is considered a delicacy and is a significant part of the local cuisine.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Curacha is a large, non-swimming crab with a unique red color that does not change even when cooked. It has a distinct shape, with a body that is broader than it is long and large, flat claws. The Curacha is known for its sweet, delicate flavor and succulent meat, which is found not only in its claws but also in its body.

Harvesting and Consumption[edit | edit source]

Curacha is harvested using fishing nets or traps. It is a deep-sea species, typically found at depths of 100 to 200 meters. The crabs are usually caught during the tide when they come out to feed.

In the Philippines, Curacha is often served at special occasions and gatherings. It is typically prepared boiled or steamed to preserve its natural flavor, and is often served with a sauce, such as a spicy coconut milk sauce or a vinegar-based dip.

Economic Importance[edit | edit source]

The Curacha crab is a significant source of income for many fishermen in the Zamboanga Peninsula. It is also a popular item in local markets and restaurants, contributing to the region's tourism industry.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While the Curacha crab is not currently listed as an endangered species, overfishing and habitat destruction pose threats to its population. Efforts are being made to promote sustainable fishing practices and protect the crab's natural habitat.
