Cutlery refers to any hand implement used in preparing, serving, and especially eating food in Western culture. The major items of cutlery in the Western world are the knife, fork and spoon.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of cutlery probably begins with the shell and the flint used for cutting. The primitive people must have used these things in the preparation of food. The early history of cutlery is difficult to trace, but we do know that as humans became more civilized, they began to use more sophisticated forms of cutlery.

Types of Cutlery[edit | edit source]

There are many different types of cutlery that are used in various ways. Some of the most common types include:

  • Knife: A knife is a tool with a cutting edge or blade, hand-held or otherwise, with most having a handle.
  • Fork: A fork is a tool consisting of a handle with several narrow tines on one end.
  • Spoon: A spoon is a utensil consisting of a small shallow bowl, oval or round, at the end of a handle.

Use and Care[edit | edit source]

Proper use and care of cutlery can extend its life and maintain its functionality. It is important to clean cutlery after use to prevent staining and rusting.
