Cyanoboletus pulverulentus, commonly known as the Inkstain Bolete, is a species of mushroom belonging to the Boletaceae family. This fungus is notable for its distinctive features, including a blue-staining reaction when the flesh is exposed to air and a powdery or pulverulent surface on the cap, from which its name is derived.

Description[edit | edit source]

Cyanoboletus pulverulentus mushrooms have caps that can range in color from yellow-brown to reddish-brown, and they typically measure between 5 to 15 cm in diameter. The cap surface is dry and becomes powdery or pulverulent with age, which is a key identifying feature. The pores on the underside of the cap are initially yellow but turn blue when bruised or aged. The stipe (stem) is also yellow with a reddish or brownish base and bruises blue when damaged.

The flesh of the mushroom is yellow and changes to blue almost immediately upon being cut or bruised. This rapid color change is a reaction to exposure to air and is a characteristic trait of this species.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Cyanoboletus pulverulentus is found in woodlands and forests, particularly in association with oak trees, with which it forms mycorrhizal relationships. These symbiotic relationships are crucial for the nutrient exchange between the fungus and its host tree. The species is predominantly found in North America and Europe, thriving in both deciduous and mixed forests.

Edibility[edit | edit source]

The edibility of Cyanoboletus pulverulentus is a subject of debate, but it is generally considered inedible due to its bitter taste. While not toxic, the unpleasant flavor makes it undesirable for culinary use.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

As of the current knowledge, Cyanoboletus pulverulentus does not face any immediate threats that would warrant conservation concern. However, like many fungi, its presence is dependent on the health of its woodland and forest habitats, making it susceptible to the effects of deforestation and habitat degradation.
