Cyber Monday is a marketing term for the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. It was created by retailers to encourage people to shop online. The term was coined by Ellen Davis and Scott Silverman, and made its debut on November 28, 2005, in a Shop.org press release entitled "Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year".

History[edit | edit source]

Cyber Monday came into existence as a result of observation that millions of consumers who were too busy to shop over the Thanksgiving weekend or did not find what they were looking for, shopped for bargains online that Monday from home or work. The term "Cyber Monday" was first used within the ecommerce community during the 2005 holiday season. According to Scott Silverman, the head of Shop.org, the term was coined based on 2004 research showing that one of the biggest online shopping days of the year was the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Significance and Economic Impact[edit | edit source]

Cyber Monday has become an international marketing term used by online retailers across the world. It is a day when online retailers offer outstanding promotions, discounts, and offers to encourage consumers to start their holiday shopping online. Over the years, Cyber Monday has seen growth in sales and is considered one of the major online shopping days of the year, alongside Black Friday and Singles' Day. Retailers extend their deals and update their pricing in real-time to compete for shoppers' attention.

Global Adoption[edit | edit source]

While initially a U.S phenomenon, Cyber Monday has become popular in other countries as well. Many retailers in Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and several other countries now participate in Cyber Monday by offering significant discounts and promotions. These global participations highlight the spread of Cyber Monday from a national to an international online shopping day.

Criticism and Challenges[edit | edit source]

Despite its success, Cyber Monday is not without criticism. Some critics argue that it promotes excessive consumerism and prioritizes economic gain over environmental and social sustainability. Additionally, the heavy influx of online orders leads to logistical challenges and increased environmental impacts due to packaging and transportation.

Future Trends[edit | edit source]

The future of Cyber Monday looks promising with advancements in technology such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and improved mobile commerce. These technologies could further personalize shopping experiences and streamline logistics, making online shopping even more appealing and efficient.
