DKMS

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

DKMS is a non-profit organization based in Tübingen, Germany, dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. The organization's primary goal is to increase the number of stem cell donors worldwide in order to provide a second chance at life for patients in need of a stem cell transplant.

History[edit | edit source]

DKMS was founded in 1991 by Peter Harf in honor of his wife, Mechtild Harf, who had lost her battle with leukemia. The organization started with a database of just 3,000 potential donors, but has since grown to include over 10 million registered donors worldwide, making it the largest bone marrow donor center in the world.

Mission[edit | edit source]

The mission of DKMS is to provide every blood cancer patient with a second chance at life. The organization achieves this by recruiting stem cell donors from around the world, raising funds to match patient and donor, and promoting blood stem cell transplantation as a treatment option for patients with blood disorders.

Operations[edit | edit source]

DKMS operates in several countries, including the United States, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, Chile, and India. In each country, the organization works to recruit and register potential stem cell donors, raise funds, and advocate for patients in need of a stem cell transplant.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Since its inception, DKMS has facilitated over 100,000 life-saving stem cell transplants. The organization's work has not only saved lives, but also raised awareness about the importance of stem cell donation and the fight against blood cancer.
