Dale Alford
Dale Alford (January 28, 1916 – January 25, 2000) was an American physician and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from Arkansas from 1959 to 1963.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Dale Alford was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on January 28, 1916. He attended the public schools in Little Rock and later graduated from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. He earned his medical degree from the University of Arkansas in 1942.
Career[edit | edit source]
After earning his medical degree, Alford served as a flight surgeon in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to Little Rock and established a private ophthalmology practice.
In 1955, Alford was elected to the Little Rock School Board, where he served until 1958. During his tenure on the school board, he opposed the integration of Little Rock's public schools following the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.
In 1958, Alford was elected to the United States House of Representatives as an independent candidate. He served in Congress from 1959 to 1963. After leaving Congress, Alford returned to his medical practice in Little Rock.
Death[edit | edit source]
Alford died on January 25, 2000, just three days before his 84th birthday.
