Dan Burton (born June 21, 1938) is an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative for Indiana's 5th congressional district from 1983 to 2003 and for Indiana's 6th congressional district from 2003 to 2013. He is a member of the Republican Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Dan Burton was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Shortridge High School and later graduated from Indiana University in 1960. Burton also served in the United States Army and the United States Army Reserve.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Burton began his political career in the Indiana House of Representatives, serving from 1967 to 1968. He then served in the Indiana State Senate from 1969 to 1970. In 1982, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until his retirement in 2013.

During his tenure in Congress, Burton was known for his work on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, where he served as chairman from 1997 to 2002. He was also a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
