Daum Communications

Daum Communications is a South Korean web portal in South Korea, one of the top three along with Naver and Nate. Daum offers many internet services to web users, including a popular free web-based e-mail, messaging service, forums, shopping and news. The word "daum" means "next" in Korean.

Daum Communications was founded in 1995 by Jay Kim. It was the first web service in South Korea to develop its own search engine and was once the most popular website in South Korea, before being overtaken by Naver. In 2014, Daum merged with Kakao to form Kakao Corp, the entity behind KakaoTalk and KakaoPay, among other services.

Daum offers a wide range of services, including:

  • Daum Mail: A web-based email service.
  • Daum Cafe: A web community service where users can create their own communities or join existing ones.
  • Daum Blog: A blogging platform where users can publish their own blogs.
  • Daum Search: A search engine that provides search services for web, image, blog, map, and more.
  • Daum News: A news portal that offers a wide range of news from various sources.
  • Daum Dictionary: An online dictionary service that provides definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and more.

Merger with Kakao[edit | edit source]

In 2014, Daum Communications merged with Kakao to form Kakao Corp. The merger was aimed at creating a mobile lifestyle platform that would provide a variety of services, including messaging, gaming, music, and more. The combined company operates under the name Kakao and continues to use the Daum brand for some of its web services.
