David Muldrow Beasley (born February 26, 1957) is an American politician and the current Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), a position he has held since April 2017. Beasley is a member of the Republican Party and served as the 113th Governor of South Carolina from 1995 to 1999.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
David Beasley was born in Darlington, South Carolina. He attended Clemson University before transferring to the University of South Carolina, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and later a law degree. His early education laid the foundation for his career in politics and public service.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Beasley began his political career in the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he served from 1979 to 1995. During his tenure, he was known for his work on education reform and economic development. In 1994, Beasley was elected Governor of South Carolina, serving from 1995 to 1999. As governor, he focused on welfare reform, education, and economic development.
World Food Programme[edit | edit source]
In 2017, Beasley was appointed Executive Director of the World Food Programme, the food-assistance branch of the United Nations. Under his leadership, the WFP has focused on addressing global hunger and food insecurity, particularly in conflict zones and areas affected by climate change. Beasley has been a vocal advocate for increased international cooperation and funding to combat hunger.

During his tenure at the WFP, Beasley has received numerous accolades for his work in humanitarian aid. In 2020, the World Food Programme was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger and improve conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas.
