David Roberts (born July 23, 1951) is a retired American pole vaulter who competed in the 1970s. He is known for his achievements in the sport, including setting world records and winning medals in international competitions.

Early Life and Education

David Roberts was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he competed in collegiate track and field events. During his time at Rice, Roberts developed his skills in pole vaulting and began to gain recognition for his performances.

Athletic Career

Roberts' athletic career took off in the early 1970s. He won the NCAA pole vault title in 1971 and 1973, establishing himself as one of the top pole vaulters in the United States. In 1972, he competed in the Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany, where he finished in fourth place.

World Records

David Roberts set multiple world records in pole vaulting during his career. On June 22, 1976, he broke the world record with a vault of 5.70 meters (18 feet 8.25 inches) in Eugene, Oregon. He continued to push the boundaries of the sport, setting another world record of 5.75 meters (18 feet 10.25 inches) on July 30, 1976, in Montreal, Canada.

Major Competitions

Roberts won the gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City. He also competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, where he won the bronze medal in pole vaulting.

Retirement and Legacy

After retiring from competitive pole vaulting, David Roberts remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor. His contributions to pole vaulting have been recognized by his induction into various halls of fame, including the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame.
