Dawes County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,182. Its county seat is Chadron. The county was formed in 1885 and named after James W. Dawes, the sixth Governor of Nebraska.

Dawes County is located in the northwestern part of Nebraska, with its northern boundary bordering South Dakota. The county has a total area of 1,401 square miles, of which 1,396 square miles is land and 4.9 square miles is water.
