Dax
Dax is a commune in the Landes department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. It is a sub-prefecture of the department.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Dax is located on the banks of the Adour river, some 20 km from the Atlantic Ocean and 50 km north of Bayonne. It is a market town, also known for its bullfighting and its hot water, and was a Celtic settlement before its Roman foundation.
History[edit | edit source]
In the 1st century AD, Dax was first established as a Roman military camp because of its strategic location. This was a logical place for the Romans to establish a commercial center and Dax was born. The name Dax comes from the Roman name for the town, Civitas Aquensium.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Dax is known for its spa resort which specializes in mud treatment for rheumatism and similar ailments. The town also hosts the Cathedral of Notre-Dame Ste-Marie and the Dax Arena, a multi-purpose stadium.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of 2018, the population of Dax was approximately 20,485. The inhabitants of the town are known as Dacquois and Dacquoises.
