DeLorme
DeLorme is a company that specializes in mapping software, GPS devices, and digital maps. Founded in 1976 by David DeLorme, it has been a pioneer in the field of personal satellite navigation and mapping solutions. The company's headquarters are located in Yarmouth, Maine, United States.
History[edit | edit source]
DeLorme began as a map-making company when David DeLorme was frustrated by the lack of detailed maps for the state of Maine. He decided to create his own, which led to the publication of "The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer" in 1976. This atlas featured topographic maps that were much more detailed than those that were commercially available at the time. The success of this atlas led to the expansion of the company into other states and the development of various mapping products.
In the 1990s, DeLorme ventured into digital mapping technology and launched Street Atlas USA, one of the first consumer-oriented mapping software for personal computers. This was followed by the introduction of Earthmate, a GPS receiver that could be connected to a laptop to provide real-time navigation using DeLorme's digital maps.
Products[edit | edit source]
DeLorme's product line has evolved over the years from paper atlases to sophisticated digital mapping solutions and GPS devices. Some of their key products include:
- Paper Atlases: DeLorme continues to publish highly detailed atlases for various states, known for their accuracy and comprehensive coverage of outdoor recreational spots.
- Digital Mapping: The company offers a range of digital mapping products for both consumer and professional use, including topographic maps, street maps, and satellite imagery.
- GPS Devices: DeLorme has developed a series of GPS devices, including the inReach series, which provides satellite communication capabilities, allowing users to send and receive text messages, track their journey, and share their location, even from remote areas without cell coverage.
- Software: DeLorme's mapping software, such as Street Atlas USA and Topo North America, provides detailed mapping and navigation tools for personal computers.
Acquisition by Garmin[edit | edit source]
In 2016, DeLorme was acquired by Garmin, a global leader in GPS technology. This acquisition has allowed Garmin to expand its portfolio of consumer and professional navigation solutions, incorporating DeLorme's expertise in mapping and satellite communication into its products.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
DeLorme's legacy lies in its pioneering work in personal navigation and mapping solutions. The company's commitment to providing detailed and accurate maps has made it a trusted name among outdoor enthusiasts, professionals, and casual users alike. Even after its acquisition by Garmin, DeLorme's products, especially the inReach series, continue to be popular for their reliability and innovative features.
