Dead Ringers (film)
Dead Ringers is a 1988 Canadian-American psychological horror film directed by David Cronenberg, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Norman Snider. Based on the novel Twins by Bari Wood and Jack Geasland, the film stars Jeremy Irons in a dual role as identical twin gynecologists, Elliot and Beverly Mantle, who share everything from their clinic to their women. This leads them into a downward spiral of drugs and madness, with tragic consequences.
Plot[edit | edit source]
The film opens with the young Mantle twins discussing the differences in the female anatomy. Years later, they are successful gynecologists with a particularly innovative practice. Elliot, the more confident and cynical of the two, seduces women and passes them on to the shy and sensitive Beverly. Their symbiotic relationship begins to falter when Beverly becomes emotionally attached to one of their mutual lovers, actress Claire Niveau (Geneviève Bujold). As Beverly's dependence on prescription drugs worsens, so does his grip on reality, leading to a tragic series of events that threaten to destroy the brothers' lives.
