Dean Brooks
Dean Kent Brooks (July 22, 1916 – May 30, 2013) was an American psychiatrist and actor. He is best known for his role as Dr. John Spivey in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Dean Brooks was born in Columbus, Kansas, and grew up in Eugene, Oregon. He attended the University of Kansas where he earned his undergraduate degree. He later received his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School (now known as Oregon Health & Science University).

Psychiatric Career[edit | edit source]
Brooks served as the superintendent of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon from 1955 to 1981. During his tenure, he was known for his progressive approach to mental health care, advocating for patient rights and the deinstitutionalization movement. He implemented various reforms aimed at improving the conditions and treatment of patients.

Dean Brooks is perhaps most famously known for his role in the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The film was shot on location at the Oregon State Hospital, where Brooks was serving as superintendent.
