Overview[edit | edit source]

Decidual cells are specialized cells that form in the endometrium of the uterus during pregnancy. They are derived from endometrial stromal cells and play a crucial role in the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. These cells undergo a process known as decidualization, which is essential for the successful implantation of the embryo and the formation of the placenta.

Formation[edit | edit source]

Decidual cells originate from endometrial stromal cells, which are fibroblast-like cells found in the uterine lining. During the menstrual cycle, these stromal cells remain relatively inactive. However, upon implantation of a fertilized ovum, they undergo decidualization, a process characterized by morphological and functional changes.

Decidualization Process[edit | edit source]

Decidualization is initiated by the hormonal changes that occur after ovulation, particularly the increase in progesterone levels. This process involves the transformation of stromal cells into large, polygonal decidual cells. Key features of decidualization include:

Functions[edit | edit source]

Decidual cells perform several critical functions during pregnancy:

Support of Embryo Implantation[edit | edit source]

Decidual cells create a supportive environment for the implanting embryo. They secrete various factors that promote trophoblast invasion and placental development. The decidual tissue provides a rich source of nutrients and growth factors necessary for early embryonic development.

Immune Modulation[edit | edit source]

One of the most important roles of decidual cells is to modulate the maternal immune response. They help prevent the maternal immune system from attacking the semi-allogeneic embryo. Decidual cells express HLA-G, a non-classical major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecule that contributes to immune tolerance.

Angiogenesis[edit | edit source]

Decidual cells secrete angiogenic factors that promote the formation of new blood vessels, ensuring an adequate blood supply to the developing placenta and embryo. This is crucial for the exchange of nutrients and waste products between the mother and the fetus.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Abnormalities in decidualization can lead to pregnancy complications such as recurrent pregnancy loss, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Insufficient decidualization may result in inadequate support for the embryo, while excessive decidualization can lead to pathological conditions.

Research Directions[edit | edit source]

Current research on decidual cells focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying decidualization and their role in pregnancy-related disorders. Studies are also exploring the potential of decidual cells in regenerative medicine and their use in therapeutic applications.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

Decidual cells are essential components of the uterine environment during pregnancy. Their ability to support embryo implantation, modulate immune responses, and promote angiogenesis highlights their importance in reproductive biology. Ongoing research continues to uncover the complexities of these cells and their potential applications in medicine.
