Decompression cylinder

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Decompression cylinder is a specific type of scuba diving equipment used by divers to ascend safely from deep dives. The decompression cylinder, also known as a deco bottle or stage bottle, contains a gas mixture that is breathed by the diver during the decompression stops to prevent decompression sickness.

Usage[edit | edit source]

During a deep dive, the diver accumulates inert gases in the body tissues. If the diver ascends too quickly, these gases can form bubbles, leading to decompression sickness. To avoid this, the diver makes decompression stops at various depths during the ascent, breathing from the decompression cylinder.

The gas mixture in the decompression cylinder is typically different from the breathing gas used during the dive. It often contains a higher proportion of oxygen to help eliminate the inert gases from the body more quickly. The specific gas mixture is chosen based on the depth and duration of the dive.

Types of Decompression Cylinders[edit | edit source]

There are several types of decompression cylinders, including:

  • Aluminum cylinders: These are lightweight and resistant to corrosion, but they have a lower pressure rating than steel cylinders.
  • Steel cylinders: These are heavier and more durable than aluminum cylinders, and they have a higher pressure rating.
  • Carbon fiber cylinders: These are lightweight and have a high pressure rating, but they are more expensive and less durable than aluminum or steel cylinders.

The size of the decompression cylinder depends on the duration of the decompression stops. For short stops, a small cylinder may be sufficient. For longer stops, a larger cylinder or multiple cylinders may be needed.

Safety Considerations[edit | edit source]

Using a decompression cylinder requires special training. The diver must know how to calculate the correct gas mixture and decompression stops, and how to handle the cylinder underwater. Incorrect use of a decompression cylinder can lead to serious health risks, including oxygen toxicity and decompression sickness.
