The Deep Artery of Penis (also known as the Arteria profunda penis) is an artery in the penis that plays a crucial role in erectile function. It is a branch of the internal pudendal artery and supplies blood to the corpora cavernosa, a pair of sponge-like regions of erectile tissue which contain most of the blood in the penis during an erection.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The deep artery of the penis runs in the center of each corpus cavernosum, but its course and branches are not the same on every side. It gives off several branches, which pierce the tunica albuginea and run between the cavernous spaces.

Function[edit | edit source]

During sexual arousal, the deep artery of the penis dilates to increase blood flow to the penis. This causes the corpora cavernosa to expand, leading to an erection. The artery's ability to dilate and increase blood flow is crucial for erectile function.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Problems with the deep artery of the penis can lead to erectile dysfunction. This can be due to atherosclerosis, where plaque builds up in the artery, or due to damage from surgery or injury.
