Deflagration

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Deflagration is a term used in chemistry and physics to describe a type of combustion that occurs at subsonic speeds. This is in contrast to detonation, which occurs at supersonic speeds. Deflagration is a common phenomenon in many everyday occurrences, such as the burning of a candle or the ignition of a gas stove.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Deflagration involves a heat transfer; heat is transferred to unreacted material via conduction or radiation. The heat is then transferred to the reactants, which then react to produce heat. This process continues, creating a self-sustaining reaction. The reaction rate of deflagration is less than the speed of sound in the original, unreacted material. This is in contrast to detonation, where the reaction rate is greater than the speed of sound in the material.

Deflagration in Industry[edit | edit source]

In the chemical industry, deflagration is often used in controlled settings to burn off unwanted gases. This is done using a flare stack, which is designed to safely burn off flammable gases that are released during the production process.

In the mining industry, deflagration can be a significant safety concern. If flammable gases such as methane are present in a mine, they can deflagrate, causing a mine explosion. To prevent this, mines are often ventilated to remove these gases.

Deflagration and Safety[edit | edit source]

Deflagration can be a safety concern in many industries. In addition to the mining industry, deflagration can also be a concern in the petroleum industry, where flammable gases are often present. Deflagration can also occur in residential settings, such as in a gas leak in a home.

To prevent deflagration, it is important to properly ventilate areas where flammable gases are present. It is also important to properly maintain equipment to prevent leaks of flammable gases.
